Do you know what 'Easter Eggs' refer to in computing?
A: Even programmers need a little something to keep them from going
completely insane while making up the next hot database compiler, so quite
often they will include what are known as "Easter Eggs" in their code. These
small, sometimes bizarre hidden programs and screens can only be accessed if
you know the "secret." Here are a few of my personal favorites:
WINDOWS 95/98: Right-click the desktop, select Properties, and click the
Screen Saver tab. Under Screen Saver, select 3D Text, then click the
Settings button. Type "volcano" (without quotes) on the Text line and click
OK. Watch the preview screen (on the Screen Saver tab) or click Preview, and
you'll see the names of famous volcanoes!
MICROSOFT WORD 97:
If you're sick and tired of typing up memos and proposals.
give yourself a break with a little pinball.
Now you can be the Office Wizard - Pinball Wizard, that is.
Open a blank document and type in the word "Blue".
Double-click the word to select it,
then under the Format menu select Font.
In the Font menu, select Bold.
Change the word's color to Blue.
Press OK to quit the Font dialog,
then put a space after the word Blue.
Select Help, About,
and click on the Word logo in the upper-left corner.
In the Pinballgame that follows,
use the Z and M keys to control the flippers,
and when the boss comes around the corner
you can press Esc to get back to Word.
