Viewing the Sandhills Cranes

Yes, it was cold!
We got up at 4:30AM which was way too early for the girls. It didn't take us long to get to our watching spot, but the hour wait for the sun to come up and the cranes to start their morning flight was long and cold!

Islands in the Stream
We forgot the binoculars, but luckily we made the acquaintance of three people from Iowa, who were sharing our vantage point, and they offered us their binoculars. It was then that we could tell that one or two of the "islands" we saw were not actually land at all, but vast groups of cranes that had roosted in shallow water."

Cranes in Flight
Matted and framed, I call it "Cranes in Flight."
With the dawn the cranes left their river-bed and took to the skies to make the short journey to the nearby cornfields where these 3-foot-tall birds spent the day dining and dancing.
